Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative Trust Fund Awarded to BHT

August 28, 2009

On August 13, Governor Tim Kaine announced $2.8 million in grants from the Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative (CNI), to be distributed to eight Virginia organizations dedicated to serving the needs of those suffering from brain and spinal cord injuries. Our team received funding for the development and testing of an Internet intervention to prevent pressure ulcers and promote healthy skin management behaviors in people with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Pressure ulcers are a common, costly, and potentially life-threatening condition, and every person with SCI is at lifelong risk for developing them. While pressure ulcers can be prevented with health maintenance behaviors, currently there is difficulty in providing pressure ulcer prevention for people with SCI and their family caregivers due to a lack of financial resources and qualified clinicians to deliver face-to-face programs. To overcome the current barriers to obtaining prevention education, we will be partnering with Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center (WWRC) in Fishersville, Virginia and the Virginia Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, to develop, test and optimize an Internet Intervention to help adults with SCI prevent Stage II or greater pressure ulcers.
